Step One: Judgement Day
For most, having to decide which items to get rid of will be the hardest part of the process. Some of your belongings may have some sort of sentimental value, but sometimes you need to let go for your own sake. Also, if you find yourself thinking you’ll use something despite the fact you haven’t touched it in years, kill that thought and throw the item in your “discard” pile.
Step Two: Cash Out
There is truth to the adage “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” For this step, gather all of the items you won’t be taking with you and try to sell them online or via a garage sale. You’ll be surprised by how many of your unused items will be sold and how much money you will earn. All of the proceeds can then be used towards your move or furniture for your new home.
Step Three: Get in the Giving Spirit
If there are some items you can’t manage to get rid of, there is probably a family in need that could use them. Gather everything you can’t sell and take it to your nearest Goodwill, Salvation Army or other local charity organization.
Step Four: Stay Organized
To make packing easier, you’ll want to stay organized. You can stick to your own system, but we recommend you have some sort of system in place. Whether you want to pack by item type or by room, make sure organization is involved to make for a speedy and easy packing and unpacking experience.
Step Five: Mark and Label All Boxes
The last thing you’ll want is to show up at your new home and have no idea which box contains which items. After you finish sealing each box, label it so you know the contents within. You’ll thank yourself when you don’t have to open and dig through every box to unpack for one room.
